Setting the Stage: Presidentiables and their Platforms

Alongside the Philippines’s robust economy is the monstrous vehicular traffic which congests all major roads in Metro-Manila. According to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) the increasing number of vehicles plying the streets and the incompetent mass transport system cost road users a staggering P2.4 billion a day which will balloon to P6 billion a day by 2030.

Same sentiment was shared by Senator Sonny Angara he said, “It’s a combination. MMDA, DOTC, and DPWH must come up with an integrated proposal because they are all linked. The traffic situation is unacceptable in any part of the world.”

Metro-Manila is considered to be the center of commerce in the Philippines and any delay in the movement of products and services will translate to a huge loss in terms of money and opportunities.

A recent Social Weather Stations review showed that no past president had scored satisfactorily in traffic management.

This should be one of the priority platforms of the next President.  Let us take a look at what are the solutions of the Presidentiables to relieve the traffic problem in Metro-Manila.

    Grace Poe

Fast-track the completion of MRT&, LRT6, Skyway3, LRT2 East Extension, Northrail and Southrail.Strictly enforce traffic rules for drivers of cars, buses, jeepneys, motorcycles, and pedestrians. Upgrade and expand coverage of computer-coordinated traffic signalling system.  She wants to remove colorum busses from the streets and require operators to do away with the boundary system of paying their drivers.Encourage investment and job creation outside the major cities. She also plans to hire a competent DOTC chief who actually knows what he’s doing and not just wasting everyone’s time by acting busy but not doing anything.

    Rodrigo Duterte

Affordable and efficient mass transport is the key to use their vehicle less. The use of the Pasig and Marikina Rivers for marine transport and embankments for mass transport. We need to utilize the water transport system as an alternative. The government needs to invest in rail systems in regions to enable proper transport around major urban centers.Volume reduction program, like the number coding scheme should be studied carefully since it has not worked.A National Land Use Program, which shall be the basis for regional and local zoning laws shall be legislated after languishing in Congress for 30 years. The long term goal is to decongest cities by providing countryside opportunities. When the city is decongested the issues with the transport system will no longer be a problem.

The Buyogan Festival is a group of cultural performers from Leyte, which was critically impacted by Typhoon Yolanda three years ago. They have won several championships at the Sinulog Festival and are proud to represent the nation in this historic event.

They have choreographed a special performance which is a tribute to the world for their help after Typhoon Hayien and also showing the resilience of the Filipinos moving from devastation to rehabilitation and to celebration.

The WCF is part of the 35th anniversary celebration of The Art of Living, a global movement founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Speaking on this grand celebration, World Culture Festival 2016, The Art of Living founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said, “We are a part of one humanity and we express ourselves differently through music, art and food. ??The Art of Living is looking for generous benefactors and sponsors who would like to contribute and make the dream of the award-winning Buyogan Festival cultural performers to travel to India a reality.

The Buyogan Festival is a fiesta that is celebrated in the coastal town of Abuyong in Leyte, where the local buyog or bees take the spotlight as vibrant bee dancers perform during a grand parade. No doubt, it would be a shining moment for Tacloban—an area that has been reeling from challenges in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda—its people, and our nation as we showcase the best of the Philippines to the world.

‘World Culture Festival’ (WCF) is expected to host millions of people from over 155 countries in New Delhi. The event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism and the Government of India.

The 3-day grand festival will have a massive 7-acre stage to seat thousands of artists, dignitaries and guests as they witness the staging of a most impressive variety of music, dances and other art forms from India and across the globe, with the vision of preserving them for future generations. On all three days of the festival, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will lead a ‘Peace Meditation’ which would be joined by millions from across the globe.
